As some of you know, Baxter is our precious attention hound of a feline! He has learned how to play catch and fetch with his mice and he is always up for some loves!! We recently noticed he has been losing some weight so we decided to take him to the vet just to insure he was ok. The last time he was weighed was January and he weighed 17lbs 4oz. Yesterday he weighed 12lbs 5 oz. So, he lost a tremendous amount of weight in a short period of time. The vet didn't find anything by just looking at him so she ran some blood work. BINGO, found out the problem. He has been diagnosed with diabetes. His glueclose levels were through the roof!! They also took a urine sample and found that it is the "good" type of diabetes and with treatment he should live a normal life. That is the catch... Treatment.. He has to have insulin shots 2 times daily and we have to take away his automatic feeder, which is going to be worse than the shots I think!! Mind you, I have never given a shot nor has Craig. Can you say disaster??? Well, we decided to give it a whirl. We gave him his first shot this morning and all went really well. Of course this is going to be short term because as soon as he figures out we are going to stick him with this syringe, he is going to run for the hills! So far so good, we will just have to wait and see how he reacts to it. He seems to be a little sluggish this morning, but I am not sure if is the normal Saturday slug attitude or if he is having some affects from the insulin. Time will tell I suppose. Keep him in your little pocket of prayers and lets hope this works. It saddens me to think my Baxter is sick, but being treatable is a plus. It might be a pain in the rear to figure this treatment out, but we will do anything for our kids, be them actual kids or animals.

Poor kitty. It would be aweful hard to have to give shots everyday. But I am with you on the pets being like your kids. I would do it, if it meant my kids would feel better. I hope Baxter gets to feeling better soon!
